Our Class Business started 3 years ago as a way to help the students learn fractions, one to one correspondence, measuring, money etc. in a meaningful Applied Learning situation. We began by selling to school staff and our business has grown from there.
The students are involved in designing the labels, purchasing the ingredients, making, packaging and selling the finished product. Students are paid a wage according to enthusiasm and contribution (based on their ability). The students are now able to carry out the entire process independently.
We take orders from staff at school, sell to family, friends and local schools, set up a stall at Bunnings in Epping where we sell to staff and the community. Our treats have also been sold through the Knox Vet Clinic. At Christmas we make special dog Christmas stockings which contain our treats. We are hoping to branch into Wanna Wash Dog Shampoo and Soap in the future.
The students go shopping at the end of the year to purchase something they have been aiming for e.g iPod 6, Samsung Galaxy tablet, C.D. player etc. This gives the students a sense of pride in earning their own money to purchase a special item. They also collectively donate to a Charity e.g. last year they purchased pillows, socks and jocks for the homeless at Saint Mary’s House of Welcome.
