This overview was written on 7/4/2016 and it applies to version Alpha 2.0.3 Empyrion Galactic Survival has everything you would ever want from a Sci-Fi survival game, you can build your own ships, travel to new worlds, meet the locals and shoot them in the face. To top it all off, the game is built in a way that you can enjoy both single player and multiplayer. As of 2.0.3, the game has improved immensely since it was released, but it is still very obviously an early access title where there are areas in the game that are just not fleshed out yet. What EGS doesn’t deliver on at this time is overshadowed by the immense freedom and options given to the player. Strengths: • EGS delivers a true rags to riches story for your character, you begin your adventure with a few resources and tools pulled from an escape pod, and end with you at the helm of an intergalactic capital vessel as you explore space. • Ship building is relatively simple and EGS avoids the complex engineering knowhow that is needed in other games. It is simple to slap on some parts, armor, and weapons to get a ship to fly. At the same time, the editor is robust enough to make amazing ships limited by your creativity. • In creative mode you can build a ship, then save it to a blueprint where you can then use the blueprint/factory feature to easily replicate your design while playing a game in survival mode. If you happen to lack the creativity to make a decent looking ship (I’m in that category), you can easily subscribe to any of the blueprints that are available on the steam workshop and use them in game. Weaknesses: • There is a very steep learning curve initially where is it very difficult to understand what does what, and what is needed to progress. There is a tutorial in game, but as of 2.0.3, it is broken, which can cause a lot of confusion early in the game. The game’s community is very supportive to new players, but the initial difficulty could be a deterrent. • As of 2.0.3, the game’s AI for enemy combatants fits on either end of the difficulty spectrum. In one case you could be easily shooting drones out of the air that can’t seem to find you. Or you are getting shredded by turrets that know exactly where you are and can shoot you with pinpoint accuracy. There are also moments where the AI just seems broken, an example of this is when fighting enemy soldiers while standing on a block, the soldiers will rush the block but will be unable to shoot back at the player. • The crafting system can feel slow and convoluted. There are many tiers of components needed to construct devices. A player must first process raw ore into ingots, ingots into lesser components, lesser components into more complex components and then finally the device. Couple this with how slow constructors feel forces the player to master logistical gymnastics to get a production line going smoothly. EGS emulates the crafting system found in Space Engineers, but does not provide the automation tools and other features provided. Overall Empyrion Galactic Survival is a fantastic survival game that can be very challenging, but at the same time extremely rewarding. The game is drastically different from where it is started, and it continues to improve with every release. Definitely worth the purchase cost.
